Iceland Airwaves 2014: Fresh Erupting Tunes!

Ever since I came to visit Iceland for the first time in 2010 there has been one music festival on the calendar I don’t want to miss: Iceland Airwaves! A small showcase festival that started of in 1999 for local bands and evolved into an international festival showcasing the Icelandic music-scene but has had also several international acts on the verge of breakthrough. This years edition also brought some big names into Reykjavik. War on Drugs, The Flaming Lips and the final concert of The Knife. A total number of 219 bands, of which only 65 not-Icelandic ones, performed at least one time during the festival. As some Icelandic musicians tend to be playing in more than one band some face could be seen a dozen times. Although the financing of the musical industry in Iceland currently is under fire due to a sudden weather change in parliament (which lead to revoking almost all grands) the Icelandic music during Airwaves sounded even stronger than before. With over 600 performances for free scheduled during the day/night in bars, recordstores and shops you could say the festival was bigger than ever before. There was only one small problem.. with so many concerts to attend: where to be begin?! Luckily almost every band is worth checking out so the changes of bad decisions were nihil. Nevertheless choosing was tough. Therefore, in general, I chose to not choose at all and was guided by the recommendations of the Iceland Music Export-agency, locals and other music fanatics. During the festival I saw about 50 different bands on- and off-venue. Because I’m crazy about music I selected eleven as highlights of this years festival.

Bird:

On the first night of Airwaves the festival already had several famous Icelandic bands on the menu. FM Belfast, Agent Fresco, Lay Low, Sin Fang, Ásgeir, Ghostigital, Leaves, Mammút. It almost felt like the grand finale although this was just day one! Big names or not my highlight of the evening was an aspiring newcomer: Bird. Originally a solo-project of the 26-yo Jón Valur Gudmundsson who previously worked for Ásgeir as a drummer and sound-engineered for Hjálmar. His first single ‘Go Back’ In april 2014 put him on the Icelandic music-map. Freshly produced a bit melancholic indie-pop. Only six months later he assembled a band around him and played his very first gig during Airwaves. After the ice broke Bird sounded very convincing. It wouldn’t surprise me Jón Valur is going to be bigger than Ásgeir and be the next the heir for the Icelandic indie-pop throne as his music and charisma is already shining.

Kælan Mikla:

Going through the program a photograph of three little blonde girls attracted my attention. Together they called themselves Kælan Mikla (translated: ‘Lady of the Cold’) and their music? Poetry punk. In the middle of the capitalistic heart of Reykjavik on Bankastræti they were giving a performance at the local hostel. Usually you would expect a lot of verbal abusive screams, loud drums, screeching guitars when referring to punk-music. Kælan Mikla however was different. Sure, there were some screams but apart from the ductaped boobies of the leadsinger, or actually poetry-teller, their performance was quite decent an intriguing. I wasn’t able to comprehend any of the poetic lyrics but there was something about the way of their performance that made sense and made it intense. These three girls definitely were able to turn their worldview into music.

Emilie Nicolas:

I have to admit, I’m getting a bit predictable but every chance I have to see, hear and highlight one of the best Norwegian singers at the moment I will. I had seen Emilie Nicolas during the past year in Groningen, Oslo and Århus and was blown away by her voice time after time. I really get goosebumps every time I hear her sing ‘Grown Up’. Which is probably also one of her best songs. Her powerful voice and music got me nailed to the ground again for the whole 30 minutes of her performance. Wonderful! If I do need to critize her there are two things. On stage she is never in the spotlight and her music shouldn’t be solely available in Norway. There is a world outside Norway that is dying to hear you Emilie!

Tremoro Tarantura:

After being starstruck by Emilie I had to hurry to see yet another great Norwegian band: Tremoro Tarantura! I had seen them play for a little audience during the Nordic Delight Festival in Utrecht (Holland) and knew they deserved a bigger audience. So, I went and many more followed. Who wouldn’t? These guys and girl aren’t just playing fascinating tunes they also have humor. For instance they describe themselves as جنسي (sex/gender) and are interested in Волк меха и шампанское (Wolf, fur and champagne). Watching their latest video ‘Cameneon’ it might suggest their opinion about making music is like giving birth to a child. Their music just sounds as rough and tough as the video-images. Their thirty minutes of fame in Iceland were a big success considering the audience getting psyched in a positive way on the haunted rocktunes from Os(h)lo.

Fridaynight with Fufanu & Kiasmos:

Even though Airwaves is awesome there are some moments during the festival you cry out for some sleep as there is just so little time there is nothing to see/hear/experience. So, for those wanted to enjoy music and close their eyes for a moment the concert of Jóhann Jóhannsson was perfect. During the performance of “The Miners’ Hymns” with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra the film was played on the big screen behind the orchestra. It sounded very good but the low lights also resulted in me having a short nap. Directly afterwards I had to rush to see the singer of famous bands like Legend en Minus (Krummi Björgvinsson) presenting his latest one-man & one-girl ambient-noise-drone-project Döpur in the basement of Harpa. Different but interesting.

Not much later there was some serious offspring of The Sugarcubes on stage. Hrafnkell Kaktus (son of the former singer of The Sugarcubes) has been in the Iceland musicscene as the successful Techno-duo Fufanu together with Gudlaugur Halldór. After they decided in 2013 to add a live-drummer (Frost Gnarr) to their band the music horizon of Fufanu expanded into a more psychedelic rock soundscape. Although my initial plan was to go see my favorite red bearded electro-hero Berndsen I was advised to go check out Fufanu. It was far from disappointing. Yes, the soundengineer should have done a better job as the sound was poor but the whole performance itself was brilliant! With an extra two guitar,- and keyboardplayer they rocked the place and and almost had to be kicked of stage as the band and the audience wanted more. But their was up.. hopefully there will be many more occasssions to checke thesr guys out.

 Another bandname that buzzed through Reykjavik and “made” my fridaynight was Kiasmos. Another techno-duo but from a whole different angle as Kiasmos is the collaboration of the famous Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds and electronics-wizzard Janus Rasmussen (FO) from e.g. Bloodgroup (IS) and Byrta (FO). They had been playing together a few times over the last few years but in October 2014 they finally released their debut-album. Fifty minutes of ambient techno-soundscapes that really came to live with the two concentrated behind their MacBooks and volcanic eruptions on the screen behind them. It would have been even more exciting if they had taken live strings and drummer to the stage. You can’t have it all..

The Knife:

It was crowded. VERY crowded with a large queue for the actual queue to get in. Nevertheless it wasn’t entirely unexpected. In the history of Airwaves this was probably the first time a highly acclaimed international band played their last gig ever during the festival. Swedish The Knife already placed itself into the spotlight without playing a single note. In the hours before their performance the venue was already pretty full even before their Icelandic support-act Samaris was on stage. Just after 10pm The Knife started their performance with a 10 minutes warming up the audience with an aerobics lesson. In the following 1,5 hour the stage was taken over by The Knife and about 10 dancers dancing, singing, playing music.. Although the latter two were points for debate afterwards. Were they seriously playbacking? Did they do anything live apart from the dancing? Apart from the very loud sound with heavy bass the performance itself was quite funny although many spectators might have wanted to see an actual band.

Lily the Kid:

In comparison with The Knife watching the performance of the new band of Lilja K. Jónsdóttir was overwhelming on a different level. Previously Lilja was the singer of Bloodgroup but this year she made her solo-debut as Lily the Kid with some help from her brother Hallur Jónsson (also Bloodgroup) in the production process. On stage she was not only assisted by her brother bu also the current singer of Bloodgroup Sunna Þórisdóttir on backing vocals. Her latest songs, so I’ve been told, are quite personal. Not really something you would expect when listening to electropop. Many spectators where sort of dancing on the tender feelings of this beautiful lady. Naturally not just her beautiful long blonde moving hair and hip-motions got my attention. Especially her precious voice and the soundscapes created by her brother made Lily the Kid the best electro-act of the saturdaynight.

Airwaves Sunday’s are the best.

 After four days of musicmania you would expect there wouldn’t be any more surprises. Physically, mentally and musically exhausted the fifth day of Airwaves might feel like an appendicitis waiting to burst. But as it is ICELAND Airwaves they’ve invented the hotpot (either natural or build) to regenerate. In previous editions the Airwaves Blue Lagoon Chill-out party was the place to be. However this year I went to one of the oldest swimmingpools in Reykjavik and went for a swim and a soothing hotpot. It turned out to be the most effective way to energize for the last night of Airwaves. With international acclaimed bands The Flaming Lips and War On Drugs on the program it certainly was going to be a party. I chose however for an all Icelandic night in one of the other venues. Although the other venues were close I chose for the bar Gaukurinn as there were at least 3 bands I wanted to see. I wasn’t disappointed.

VAR:

The evening started of with VAR. Former singer-songwriter Myrra Rós formed VAR together with her husband Júliús Óttar in 2013. Their compositions were pretty awesome but they thought it was missing something. Therefore they searched and found a drummer, bass-player and guitar-player. Together VAR got even stronger and evolved into one of the best new bands there is at the moment in Iceland. Their melodious dreamy pop with a crunch sounded already very good on their Soundcloud/Bandcamp but live? Wow! This was really Iceland erupting on stage. It really surprised me Iceland Music Export (IMX), apart from highlighting them in the line-up for Airwaves, didn’t award them with a spot for the Eurosonic Festival 2015 in Groningen. They really deserve an international audience!

East of my Youth:

In a different league but also very admirable was the band on stage directly after VAR: East of my Youth. The description of their music “Electric experimental pop music with inspiration from classical and modern music” was perhaps a bit too pretentious but their performance made up for it. Although their first single and videoclip ‘Lemonstars’ sounded and looked unfinished their second live-performance ever (!) was very convincing. Singer Thelma Marín Jónsdóttir looked like Kylie Minogue at the top of her career while keyboardplayer & composer Herdís Stefánsdóttir apart from her long curly hair could easily be regarded as the female version of Vince Clarke. Playing one after another fine synthesizer-tune with Thelma impressing the audience with her voice and charme. Unfortunately they ran out of songs within half an hour but they promised to be back. They were actually quite ambitious about that. “We played our first gig last night. The same night The Knife played their very last. So there is a free spot we would like take over gladly”. Adorable, such young enthousiasm.

Rökkurró:

The closing act for the night and this years Airwaves could already be considere veterans as they’ve been playing ever since their debut in 2007: Rökkurró. Previously they made precious Icelandic folk-poprock and got many appraisals for their second album ‘Í Annan Heim’ in 2010. Apart from a very crowded concert in the famous 12-Tonar recordstore in 2013 the band was seemed to be dormant for the last few years. After some changes in the band they released their highly anticipated third album ‘INNRA’ in October. Like so many other bands the amount of electronic gear on stage had multiplied but Rökkurró managed to stay authentic.

As closing act they were possibly less spectacular as e.g. FM Belfast or The Flaming Lips but they sounded live thus warm, their new songs magnificent the feeling of coming home was overwhelming. Heima! So it does exist. There’s only one problem. Airwaves 2015 is still over 300 nights sleep away.. Well, at least I still have the music and pictures to hold on to that feeling.

Plans for 2015..

 As of December 1 2014 tickets for Iceland Airwaves which will be held from November 4^th till november 9^th are available. For just over 100,- euro’s you can claim your Early bird ticket for this five day (Icelandic) music heaven. Naturally you could also choose to just visit Reykjavik during the festival and enjoy one of the many off-venue gigs. Nevertheless, if you want to see the bands at their best a festival-wristband is recommendable.

 You might scream: “November 2015?! Aaahh that is still so far away!”. Yes. It is. In The Netherlands however we have a couple of solutions for the problem. In January 2015 Iceland will be in the spotlight during the Eurosonic music festival in Groningen. About 19 different Icelandic acts varying from Sólstafir’s Saga-metal till the Techno of Kiasmos can be enjoyed on one of the stages in Groningen. The following days several of the Icelanders can also be found elsewhere. For instance Rökkurró will also perform in Gouda and Sóley will be playing in Amsterdam. The Nordic Delight Festival does it even better by organising “Nordic Delight presents Iceland” on Saturday 17^th of January. Music, art, film and food! Tickets are on sale and changes of an imminent sell-out are likely! So get your tickets as soon as possible if you want to experience Iceland in Holland!

Iceland Airwaves '14 gonna make you wanna go back in 2015 for more!

Een van de festivals waar ik elk jaar het meeste naar uit zie bevindt zich op ongeveer 2000 km van Nederland. Gelukkig is de hoofdsponsor en naamgever van het festival elk jaar weer zo goed om de festivalbezoekers vanuit alle windstreken naar deze muzikale metropool te vliegen. Het festival? Iceland Airwaves! Sinds de kleinschalige editie van 1999 in een hangar van Icelandair in Reykjavik met louter IJslandse bands uitgegroeid tot een volwaardig showcase-festival met nog steeds veel IJslandse muziek maar ook befaamde bands vanuit de hele wereld. De bezoekers van de 16e editie van Iceland Airwaves konden zich dit jaar onder andere verheugen op het allerlaatste optreden van het Zweedse The Knife en optredens van War on Drugs en The Flaming Lips.

Dit jaar reisde ik voor het 5e opeenvolgende jaar naar het een paar jaar geleden door Rolling Stone-magazine uitgeroepen “hipste longweekend op de muzikale festivalkalender”. De line-up? Maar liefst 219 bands, waarvan 65 niet uit IJsland, konden worden bewonderd op een de podia van het vijfdaagse festival. Alsof dat nog niet genoeg waren in de binnenstad van Reykjavik een groot aantal van deze bands en nog meer lokaal talent geprogrammeerd in een groots off-venue programma. Mee dan 600 optredens konden zo gratis in een café, hostel of kledingzaak worden bezocht. Er was dit jaar voor het eerst ook een off-venue met pendelbus. In een hotel in de buurt van nationaal park Thingvellir (op 1,5uur rijden van Reykjavik) waren namelijk ook bands geprogrammeerd. De perfecte gelegenheid om ook eens buiten de stad van muziek én natuur te genieten. Met het grote aanbod aan optredens was er altijd wel ergens iets te doen en te horen. Het grootste probleem? waar te beginnen en wat kan/mag ik missen want ondanks de vele optredens kon het soms gebeuren dat er wel 7 verschillende toffe bands tegelijk optraden. Oftewel: keuzestress. Omdat eigenlijk bijna alle optredens wel de moeite waard waren had ik mij voorgenomen mij dit jaar zoveel mogelijk te laten verrassen. Behalve de paar optredens die ik echt niet wilde missen zoals onder andere Johann Johannsson’s vertolking van de soundtrack “The Miners’ Hymns” met het Icelandic Symphony Orchestra en het optreden van The Knife liet ik mij leiden door aanbevelingen van de locals, IMX en de lengte van de rijen. Want rijen, dat is iets waar Airwaves berucht om is. Tijdig van de ene naar de andere zaal lopen was iets om ook dit jaar in de planning mee te nemen. Gelukkig was er altijd wel ergens iets tofs te horen dus echt iets missen kon haast niet. Een enkele keer was de tactiek om in dezelfde zaal te blijven geen overbodige luxe. De animo voor The Knife bijvoorbeeld was zo overweldigend dat er zelfs een rij voor de rij stond. Tijdens het festival zag ik bijna 25% van het totale aanbod. Nu een paar weken na Airwaves selecteerde ik van deze 51 bands de beste, spannendste en meest intrigerende acts per dag.

Woensdag: Vliegende start met Bird.

De eerste avond van Airwaves begon al goed. Praktisch alle bands van naam en faam maakten al hun opwachting. FM Belfast, Agent Fresco, Lay Low, Sin Fang, Ásgeir, Ghostigital, Leaves en Mammút. Alsof het de grand-finale was zo spetterend begon het festival. Zeker FM Belfast staat er om bekend zulke energieke optredens te geven dat je een paar dagen nodig hebt om bij te komen. En dit was dan nog pas dag 1. De avond begon echter met een van de beste IJslandse nieuwkomers dit jaar: Bird. Oorspronkelijk was Bird het solo-project van de 26-jarige Jón Valur Gudmundsson die eerder al eens drumde bij Ásgeir en werkte als sound-engineer bij de IJslandse reggae-band Hjálmar. In april 2014 bracht hij zijn eerste single ‘Go Back’ uit waarmee hij direct een hit had in eigen land. Frisse, fraai geproduceerde indie-pop en melancholische zang. Een half jaar later speelde hij voor het eerst live met een hele band in de bar Frederiksen. In het begin was de band nog wat onwennig maar overtuigend was Bird zeker. Als zijn debuutplaat even goed is als de live-performance zou Jón Valur met gemak Ásgeir van de IJslandse indiepop-troon kunnen stoten. Zowel muzikaal als charismatisch.

Donderdag: Poëtische ijslandse punk en Noorse duisternis.

Kaelan Mikla:

Na een geslaagde eerste avond ging ik op donderdag op zoek naar een van de bands die ik op woensdag net gemist had: Kælan Mikla (vertaald: ‘Lady of the Cold’). Midden in het kloppende hart van het kapitalistische stukje Reykjavik speelde deze jonge drievrouws punk-formatie in een hostel aan de Bankastræti. Dat het hele programma die middag daar door de feministische beweging in IJsland werd georganiseerd had mij dan ook niet moeten verbazen. Bij punk zou je luid schreeuwende vocalen, stevige drumroffels en gierende gitaren verwachten.. Maar Kælan Mikla was anders. Natuurlijk, er waren wel wat schreeuwerige uithalen maar behoudens de met tape afgeplakte tepels bij de zangeres was het optreden heel beschaafd. En intrigerend, aangezien de teksten in feite poëtisch van aard waren. Waarover ze precies zongen, filosofeerden en prevelden verstond ik niet maar de performance was intens. Deze dames hadden duidelijk een eigen kijk op de wereld en muziek.

Emilie Nicolas:

In de loop van de avond mocht ik mij verheugen op maar liefst twee van mijn Noorse ontdekkingen van dit jaar. Emilie Nicolas die al eerder in mijn top 10-lijstjes naar voren kwam tijdens by:Larm en SPOT wist mij wederom een half uur gebiologeerd naar het podium te laten kijken. En te genieten van haar muziek uiteraard. Van ‘Grown Up’ krijg ik nog steeds kippenvel. Ze heeft echter wel twee minpuntjes. Tijdens haar optredens staat ze zelf nooit in de spotlight en haar debuut-plaat is vooralsnog alleen in Noorwegen te koop.

Tremoro Tarantura:

Veel tijd om na te genieten met een glas Viking-bier was er echter niet. Het volgende duistere Noorse hoogtepunt zou niet veel later 500m verderop beginnen te spelen: Tremoro Tarantura! In Nederland stonden ze dit najaar al op Incubate waar ik ze net miste maar Nordic Delight Festival waren ze ondanks het gebrek aan publiek toch zeker een van mijn hoogtepunten. En nu dus weer! Een band met humor want op Facebook beschrijven ze zichzelf als جنسي (geslacht) en ze zijn geïnteresseerd in Волк меха и шампанское (Wolf, bont en champagne). En dan heb je de video van hun laatste single ‘Cameneon’ nog niet gezien. Blijkbaar ervaren ze hun muziek als één grote bevalling. Zo rauw en groezelig als de beelden zijn zo heftig en vuig klonk het ook deze keer weer live. Kortom, een half uur lang ging een groot deel van de zaal complete uit zijn dak op de psychedelische, gejaagde rock uit Os(h)lo.

Vrijdag: Van klassiek tot techno.

Uitslapen was er noch op donderdag noch op vrijdag bij. Dondermiddag om 12 uur ‘s middags werden namelijk de “gratis” kaarten voor het optreden van Jóhann Jóhannsson’s uitvoering van ‘The Miners Hymns’ samen met The Iceland Symphony Orchestra op vrijdag uitgedeeld. En op vrijdag werden de kaarten voor de optredens van The Flaming Lips en War on Drugs uitgereikt. Het optreden van Jóhann Jóhannsson bleek in meerdere opzichten een rustpuntje. Niet alleen waren er ditmaal geen rijen (de zaal was niet “uitverkocht”) maar de muziek was zo rustiek dat ik er zelfs even een dutje bij kon doen. Na het applause was het business as usual en begon de ratrace naar de volgende optredens die ik wilde zien. Döpur bijvoorbeeld, het eenmans ambient-drone-noise-project van de zanger van o.a. Legend en Minus: Krummi Björgvinsson.

Fufanu:

Een van de bandjes die naar aanleiding van hun optreden op donderdag door diverse mensen kreeg aanbevolen was Fufanu. Sinds 2009 een succesvol techno-duo bestaande uit Hrafnkell Kaktus (de zoon van de zanger van The Sugarcubes) en Gudlaugur Halldór. Misschien waren ze de techno een beetje beu en wilden meer. In 2013 vroegen ze drummer Frost Gnarr voor de band waarna ze hun muzikale horizon wisten te verbreden tot een psychedelisch rockende soundscape. Ondanks dat het geluid verre van ideaal was wisten de 3 aangevuld met een extra gitarist en toetsenist een dusdanig vette show neer te zetten dat aan het eind van het optreden het publiek niets anders wilde dan meer van dat. Kaktus & Co hebben wat dat betreft natuurlijk voorbeeldige ouders gehad.

Kiasmos:

Een andere bandnaam die door de straten van Reykjavik gonste was Kiasmos. Eveneens een tweemans Techno-band, maar dan anders. Kiasmos is namelijk een project van de fameuze ijslandse componist Ólafur Arnalds en de electronica-tovenaar Janus Rasmussen (FO) van o.a. Bloodgroup (IS) en Byrta (FO). De afgelopen jaren maakten ze al vaker samen muziek als Kiasmos maar hun eerste grote wapenfeit is het dit najaar uitgekomen album. Vijftig minuten relaxte techno-soundscapes die live met de twee geconcentreerde en springende mannen achter laptops en iPad in een volle zaal nog gaver is. Oké,.. behalve dan die laptops. Met live violen en xylophoon zou het helemaal weergaloos zijn.

Zaterdag: The Knife en meer

Optredens van grote namen tijdens festivals gaat natuurlijk altijd gepaard met extra drukte. Het optreden van The Knife tijdens Iceland Airwaves zou echter tevens hun (aller)allerlaatste optreden zijn. Kortom, iedereen wilde daar zo leek het bij zijn. De zaal was dan ook al goed gevuld toen het “voorprogramma”, het ijslandse Samaris, nog op moest treden. Klokslag 22 uur was het dan eindelijk zover. The Knife begon aan hun laatste 1,5uur live-optreden. Na de warming-up met een fitness-instructeur om de heupen alvast los te wiegen barstte de show pas echt los. Alleen de vraag die velen zich achteraf stelden was: waar heb ik naar gekeken? Er werd gedanst, er werd soort van gezongen, er werd soort van op muziekinstrumenten gespeeld.. maar wat was live en wat niet? The Knife was als performance een zeer vermakelijk playbackshow. Alleen kon het de hooggespannen verwachting van velen daardoor niet waarmaken.

Lily the Kid:

In vergelijking met The Knife was het optreden van Lilja K. Jónsdóttir natuurlijk kinderspel. Lilja speelde eerder met haar broer Hallur Jónsson en Janus Rasmussen in Bloodgroup maar kwam dit jaar solo stevig terug als Lily the Kid. Helemaal solo was ze overigens ook niet want haar broer Hallur was nauw betrokken bij de productie en was tijdens het optreden tevens haar electro-wizzard. Op het podium werd ze vocal tevens bijgestaan door Sunna Þórisdóttir, de huidige zangeres van Bloodgroup. Volgens de kenners zouden de nieuwe nummers zeer persoonlijk van aard zijn. Niet iets dat je direct zou verwachten bij electropop. Velen stonden dan ook uitbundig te dansen op de gezongen gevoelens van deze fraaie blondine. En niet alleen zij was natuurlijk fraai met haar wulpse bewegingen en rondzwaaiende haar. Juist ook door de combinatie van haar prettige zang en de soundscapes van haar broer was Lily the Kid onbetwist de beste nieuwe electro-act van de avond.

Zondag Laatste avond: een aaneenschakeling van hoogtepunten!

Na vier dagen Airwaves zou je verwachten dat de koek op was. Fysiek, geestelijk en muzikaal. Maar Airwaves is toch echt een vijfdaags festival. Gelukkig kennen ze in IJsland ook zondagse “rust”… en hotpots! Om weer een beetje tot de mensen te komen was een bezoekje aan een van de oudste zwembaden in Reykjavik dan ook de perfecte start van de dag. Na zulk een opkikker kon de laatste dag van Airwaves natuurlijk niet meer stuk. Ook muzikaal niet, zo kon ik aan het eind van de avond concluderen. Omdat ik, in tegenstelling tot wat ik eerder suggereerde, geen kaartjes had voor The Flaming Lips en War on Drugs koos ik voor een avondje uit in een van de 3 zalen waar alleen nog IJslandse acts stonden geprogrammeerd. Alhoewel deze zalen in feite naast elkaar liggen was “even” van zaal wisselen niet verstandig. De rijen voor de deuren lieten daar geen misverstand over bestaan. Van mijn keuze om mede op aanraden van Iceland Music Export (IMX) de band VAR te gaan zien en daarom te moeten kiezen voor de kroeg Gaukurinn heb ik geen spijt gehad. Drie hoogtepunten op één avond op 1 plek!

VAR:

De band VAR zou je kunnen beschrijven als een typische ijslandse muziek-saga. Er was een een ijslandse singer-songwriter Myrra Rós die in haar eentje best succesvol was. Toen ontmoette en trouwde ze Júliús Óttar en begon een nieuwe band in 2013. Samen maakten ze niet onverdienstelijk dromerige melodische pop. Omdat ze allebei maar twee handen hadden klapten ze in hun handen waarna Egill, Andri Freyr en Arnór hun band kwamen versterken. Vier man en één vrouw sterk vormden zij een praktisch onoverwinnelijk pact en triomfeerden op de podia Iceland Airwaves. Van bovenstaande is in feite alleen het handgeklap verzonnen. VAR is een nieuwe band met jaren solo,- studio en band-ervaring en internationale allure. Als ik IMX was geweest zou ik ze in plaats van Árstíðir of Samaris naar Eurosonic laten gaan.. Steengoed!

East of my Youth:

Alsof VAR nog niet genoeg was stond direct daarna East of my Youth op het programma. “Electric experimental pop music with inspiration from classical and modern music”. Een beschrijving waarmee je nog alle kanten op zou kunnen. Uitgaande van hun eerste single ‘Lemonstars’ was daar weinig twijfel over mogelijk. Gewoon electropop. Maar waar de muziek en videoclip nog redelijk onaf overkomt zo professioneel kwam het dames-duo over op het podium. Het was pas hun tweede live-optreden ooit maar de ambitie straalde er vanaf. Zangeres Thelma Marín Jónsdóttir oogde als Kylie Minogue in haar hoogtijdagen terwijl de componiste/toetseniste Herdís Stefánsdóttir alhoewel vrouw met een weelderige haardos best wel eens de IJslandse Vince Clarke zou kunnen gaan worden. Onderkoeld de ene na de andere prettige synthesizer-melodie spelende terwijl Thelma het publiek imponeerde met haar stem en charme. Hun repertoire was nog wat krap (ze waren binnen de tijd klaar) maar ambitieus des te meer. “Gisteren speelde The Knife hun allerlaatste optreden, en wij speelden ons eerste. Nou. Wij willen best het stokje overnemen van The Knife!”. Heerlijk, zulk jeugdig enthousiasme.

Rökkurró:

De afsluitende act van de avond was het illustere Rökkurró. Voorheen bekend van fraaie, folk-poprock gezongen in het IJslands. Hun tweede album ‘Í Annan Heim’ uit 2010 album werd destijds lovend ontvangen. Ondanks het succes bleef het daarna lange tijd stil. In 2013 waren ze al wel weer even te zien op Iceland Airwaves en gaven een optreden met enkele nieuwe nummers in een overvolle platenzaak. Het eveneens illustere 12 Tonar. In oktober 2014 was daar dan eindelijk het langverwachtte derde album: ‘INNRA’. Net als bij zoveel andere bands had ook bij Rökkurró een vermenigvuldiging plaatsgevonden van het aantal toetsinstrumenten op het podium maar het was geenszins ten nadele van de authenticiteit van de band.

Als afsluitende act van Airwaves was Rökkurró misschien niet zo spectaculair als FM Belfast of The Flaming Lips maar de warme live-vertolking van hun prachtige nieuwe nummers gaf het gevoel Heima te zijn. Nu dat gevoel alleen nog even 360 dagen zien vast te houden tot de volgende Airwaves.

Tot Slot

Het ontdekken van een nieuwe Sigur Rós of Björk (behalve dan de zoon van Björk die wel meerdere keren optrad) tijdens Iceland Airwaves was misschien iets te ambitieus. Dat neemt niet weg dat de nieuwe lichting IJslandse artiesten in meerdere opzichten wist te overtuigen. Opvallend genoeg met name live! En dan heb ik het alleen nog maar over het officiële programma. Want ook het off-venue-programma dat dit jaar meer dan 600 optredens telde was zeer de moeite waard. Praktisch alle IJslandse en een enkele buitenlandse band kon je zo op meerdere locaties aantreffen. Met een beetje puzzelen kon je ook dit jaar zo je eigen festival samen stellen zonder naar het daadwerkelijke festival te gaan. Om de bands in volle glorie te zien was een festivalticket echter wel aan te raden. Op 1 december 2014 is de kaartverkoop weer begonnen en voor het zesde jaar op rij ga ik daar zeker geen spijt van krijgen!

Omdat IJsland of Iceland Airwaves nog ver weg is biedt Eurosonic/Noorderslag in januari 2015 uitkomst. Tijdens Eurosonic staat IJsland in de schijnwerpers en er spelen maar liefst 19 IJslandse bands varieërend van de metal van Sólstafir tot de dance van Kiasmos op de podia van Groningen. Maar ook buiten Groningen weerklinkt IJsland. Sommige bands zoals Rökkurró treden ook elders op in Nederland. Het Nordic Delight Festival organiseert in navolging van de eerdere geslaagde “Norwegian Night” op zaterdag 17 januari 2015 “Nordic Delight presents Iceland” met muziek en meer! De kaartverkoop is inmiddels begonnen. Zeker als je ook een stukje IJsland wilt proeven is dit de perfecte afsluiter van een midweek IJsland in Nederland.
