Muzikale Midsommarnatt in Berlijn!

English: Musical Midsummernight during Berlin Midsommar Festival 2014.
Although it's an annual phenomenon in nature the midsummernight sun is spectacular. A couple of days at the start of summer when the sun doesn't want to leave the sky. In Scandinavia and Sweden in peticular this event is celebrated with festivities on the a friday around june 21th (19-25 june). In western Europe it is less common to celebrate the event so a trip to the Nordics is the best way to join the party. Only problem, it is usually celebrated with family and friends. Berlin based PR/Music-agency Nordic by Nature and Norr Magazine arranged the perfect solution for that problem: Midsommar Berlin! This years third edition of the festival gave Berliner's and friends the chance to attend a "real" Swedish Midsummer party.
When you look at the map of Europe Berlin isn't that nearby either but the possibility to experience a free festival with many interesting (upcoming) scandinavian bands like Adna, Ice Cream Cathedral, Pooma, Blaue Blume, Sandra Kolstad and Rytmeklubben was something I didn't want to miss.
The only actual problem was getting there without too much hassle. You could get stuck in traffic while traveling by car or delays on the airport.. or a powerfailure at the trainstation of departure. Due to the latter my journey was seriously delayed. Only hours after the festival started I arrived in Berlin. Therefore I had unfortunately had to miss Swedish Adna. Her melancholic indiepop sounded great on CD and most likely has also been the perfect soundtrack to get the party started. While the festival wasn't just about the music a midsummer tree (midsommarstång) was placed in the middle of the festival area (Urban Spree). According to Swedish tradition most likely several Nordics danced around the tree at the start of the festival. Furthermore it was also possible to make yourself a crown out of flowers. Lots of ladies and an incidental guy were the stars of the night wearing their DIY headwear.
Around 9 PM my Midsommar started off with some Danish Ice Cream Cathedral after dinner. In 2013 I saw the trio for the first time when they played their sweet sounding spacepop-trio at SPOT-festival. A year has passed and their music and live-performance evolved into a heavier and more danceable DeepSpace-pop. Luckily not too heavy for after dinner conversation but still catching enough to get some of the audience dancing.
For as far the audience wanted to dance it was rather impossible during the performance of the other Danish act of the evening: Blaue Blume. A band which although still quite "young" attracted probably the biggest and most crowded audience during the night. And seriously not without reason. Where the PA-sound of the first performing artists was acceptable but not great Blaue Blume's sound was almost excellent. And not just the sound but especially their music touched brilliance. Breathtaking and most likely the highlight of the festival for everyone!
Ever since I wrote a "listen to this"-blog in 2013 I was keen to see Norwegian Sandra Kolstad play live. Unfortunately the Benelux was not on her tourprogram, yet. As Berlin is her current hometown and Nordic by Nature represents her the chances to see her live at Midsommar Berlin were quite good. Accompanied by two gentlemen for the synth's and percussion she started of the gig with champagne to toast on the Midsommar. Her blonde hair decorated with a garland and lights she was definitely dressed for the occasion. With her live performance she didn't just impress me as the Berlin-crowd was also singing and dancing along. Although I have to admit her latest single "Rooms" as a single isn't one of my favorites it sounded quite good as part of her live-set. It also made clear yet again that guitars aren't that awkward in electropop.
To get the party really started Norwegian Rytmeklubben (Rhythm club) was invited to get the crowd on their feet. This DJ/producer/liveband-collective from Trondheim were praised by several music-critics as the non-alcoholic Norwegian answer to the infamous Swedish Slagsmålsklubben (SMK). In comparison the Rytmeklubben does also play the swop-keyboard-stage position game but unlike SMK, who manage to turn it into a freakshow, quite gallant. Fortunately it is the music that counts and the crowd liked it and danced for almost the whole set. Their music actually sounds a bit more like Trippy Turtle and Cashmere Cat than SMK. They probably still need to figure out the actual Rytmeklubben-sound as they have been more busy DJ'ing and remixing songs than producing their own music. Depending on their choice to either continue remixing or start working more intensively on their own material the band Rytmeklubben might be able to outperform SMK.
To top off the night at 2 AM it was finally time for the only Finnish act of the night: Pooma. Until Midsommar I had never heard about this band. Most likely as they've almost never played outside Finland before. Their debut-album "Persuader" released in 2007 however was quite persuasive when I heard it for the first time. Their mix of ambient, post-rock, shoe-gaze and trip-hop created a genre of it's own: Lynch Pop, which might also be a reference to cinematographer David Lynch. Fascinating, well played music which unfortunately didn't really get the crowd's attention. It might have been the alcohol, the darkness of the night or most likely the missing X-factor which made Pooma's performance less persuasive. Even the singers outfit which made her look like the prude sister of Cicciolina couldn't change that. Perhaps their new upcoming album could be the ticket to their succes.
Mesmerizing about the great music during the night there was only one thing missing during Midsommar, the actual midnight sun!
Tip:
Apart from the annual Berlin Midsommar the German/Swedish Nordic by Nature is also hosting several Nordic gigs a year in Berlin. Many upcoming bands from Scandinavia have thus been introduced to the German audience. But if you prefer London there they have got the amazing Ja Ja Music. Several times a year JaJaMusic hosts a clubnight and once a year the JaJa Nordic Festival. The line-up of the 2013-edition was, to say the least, interesting with performances by e.g. múm, Mew, Postiljonen, Einar Stray, MAMMÚT, Sin Fang and Annie. Checking the Nordic by Nature,- and JaJaMusic-website once in a while is definately worthwhile if you want to Nordic-up your trips to either Berlin or London. For instance september 3-5th Nordic by Nature is hosting the free Our/Berlin during the Berlin Music Week. October 4th nevertheless there is no need to leave The Netherlands as The Nordic Delight Festival will be serving a fine selection of Nordic Music, Film and food!
